All the RAGE: A Franchise Retrospective
Переглядів 159 тис.5 годин тому
RAGE is one of the least discussed, least memorable big budget modern game franchises. How did that happen? Are the games really that bad? This video essay looks deeply at Rage 1 and Rage 2 along with heir DLC to dissect how bad games happen and what goes wrong to make them that way. I hope this retrospective critique saves someone the hours I put in. Audio editing by Nate Greene. TABLE OF CONT...

Instead of a vlog or a documentary, it is written and produced as an old-school travelogue, whic...

Fantastic review as always. I bought Rage 2 out of a bargain bin a little bit ago, but I'm glad I never played it, after seeing your video. I don't have patience for games that require no thought put into them except what happens from moment to moment. On another note, I would love to see you do a retrospective of The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. The console edition is somehow a fantastic game, in my humble opinion, with the most nonsensical and ridiculous plot that does absolutely nothing. But fighting as The Balrog, or the Eye of Sauron, or a war-elephant is just so cool and something that I have always really appreciated from the developers. And then the handheld version is a completely different game entirely. There's nothing at all that would make you think the games were linked, EXCEPT in title.

Dark Souls 2 was my first and is still my favorite. I definitely think that expectations from playing 1 is a huge aspect of the hate. It absolutely has stuff to criticize as Noah does, but the other games sure as heck do too. It’s definitely the game that requires the most wiki reading, which is not great at all. I found that if you just put 1 out of 2 levels into adaptability until you hit a decent agility break point (105? Whatever it is?) it still feels fun and you’ll be there in the first 10 hours or so. Then you can commence dumping 40 straight levels into strength or dexterity like you do in all the other games.

You should not regret your time with RAGE. Like, you said, the developers didn't want to make a bad series and gave their best. You did it for them and I am sure they will appreciate your video and that you really spent time to think about the game.

watching this after playing Starfield, it's wild how that game took a very similar approach of mythologizing the different playstyles in the narrative to basically tell the player what to do in a big and uncaring universe

I've got two gripes about the Bethesda games, and one question about Fallout 4. Gripe: Bethesda really has no idea how long 200, or even 100 years is. Gripe: On the other hand, Bethesda doesn't understand the meaning of the franchise 'War Never Changes' tag line and I really wish they'd stop using it at literally every possible opportunity because it puts me up the goddamn wall. Question: If the whole point of synths is as labor... why make them feel anything? Why make them people? Or make them mimic people depending on how you feel about it. Why give them thoughts and emotions to start with? What in the world is the point? Was building their own labor force not evil enough? Or to quote another youtuber. "Why did you make the toaster feel fear, Shaun?" That's before we get to the weirdness of the Institute's whole invasion of the body snatchers routine in general when they're more isolationist than the West Coast BOS.

But especially, I love how even for these questions, where you're doing the one take and don't have a whole script written, I can hear the voice you use in your videos. The pattern of talking, the thoughtfulness, it's all still there, and I think that's really cool. Thanks for making things your way. It's something I just don't find on the internet that often, and it makes me happy to support you.

Rage is so fascinating to me because it just lacks any personality anywhere. It's the basic white bread of post-apocalyptic games, where they’ve managed to break down the concept of the "video game" and remove all nutritional value from it, replacing it with cellulose that's supposed to trick you into thinking theres more to it.

I'd play Rage without the open world, vehicles, mini-games, side quests... basically I'd leave it a corridor shooter, for that part looks stellar. The weapon feedback is sweet, enemy animations are natural, and the gore is good. A solid id shooter being buried under a mountain of scrap is such an upsetting sight for me to this day. Less is more, but they had to show off that megatexture and the damn physics. Who knew that tech-first strategy had its shortcomings? Thank god id learned from it.

It's so weird... Like certain parts of the game I remember Vividly and fondly. Others I totally forgot about. The Host of the Mutant Smash TV gameshow, John Goodman, Wellsprings, some of the weapons, the dice roll games, some of the female characters. They REALLY tried to make them all super sexy as eye candy for the player. Other things... I just forget. Generally fighting mutants was really a poor time. Some of the worst gameplay. Vehicle combat and racing was tedious as hell too.

one of my favorite aspects about the Bridge UV bulbs is that you can get them during the day but you can't tell which ones are active. and if you pick the wrong one you get electrocuted. this would be a great deterrent if not for the fact that medkits are pretty easy to craft so you can basically revert that damage dealt.

"How is it that a game with such a bland, confused personality have such strong art direction?" I find a surprising number of games suffer from that phenomenon. ARK Survival Evolved, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, Suicide Squad (not the gameplay holy shit the visual clutter), basically any open world focused on realistic graphics manages to look stunning while being skin-deep like that.
